The best time to visit Cusco is during the dry season, from May to October. These months offer sunny days and minimal rain, making them ideal for exploring Machu Picchu and other attractions. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so booking in advance is recommended.
Most travelers from North America, Europe, and many other countries do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. However, it is always best to check with the Peruvian consulate in your country before traveling.
Cusco is located at 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) above sea level. To prevent altitude sickness, it is recommended to rest upon arrival, drink plenty of water, consume coca tea, and avoid heavy meals and alcohol on the first day. If necessary, altitude sickness medication can be used.
Some of the top attractions in Cusco include Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley (Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Moray), Sacsayhuamán, Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun), and the San Pedro Market. The city’s historic center is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The most popular way to reach Machu Picchu is by taking a train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, followed by a short bus ride to the entrance. Alternatively, adventurous travelers can hike the Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek, or other trekking routes.
